A true embodiment of the term ‘power couple,’ Louie and Chen Mencias have gained international recognition for their efforts in environmental conservation in the Philippines, featured Heroes for Today in the Asian and Australian editions of Reader’s Digest, as well as recipients of the Environmental Achievement Award from the International Underwater Foundation.
Louie specializes in environmental management and reef rehabilitation and had served as a commissioner for the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving.
Chen’s expertise lies in tourism planning and environmental education, which she shares with others through workshops, training and seminars.
Both staunch advocates of environmental education and preservation, they founded Bluewater Consultancy, where they provide technical assistance to local government units, non-governmental agencies (NGOs), academic institutions and organizations that engage in tourism master planning and conservation projects
The Mencias couple believes that the natural environment is both a venue for learning and tourism, thus they developed the “Wild Classroom” principle. They have worked with C.O.R.E. on both the Nature Class program in Environmental Conservation and in Buhay Dagat under the Community-Based Tourism Development thrust.
